“No, we have never encountered the slightest problem…” The shortage of lifeguards does not affect the pools managed by Hervé Marchetto. The reason is simple: the director of the community aquatic center of Thionville and Hamelys in Basse-Ham uses the source.
A partnership concluded between the Portes de France-Thionville conurbation and the National Federation of lifeguards allows the swimming pools of northern Moselle to swim against the tide in terms of recruitment: “Each year, we welcome around twenty candidates for the Brevet professional of youth, popular education and sports specializing in aquatic activities and swimming (BPJEPS AAN), reveals the manager. This system is unique in the Grand Est”.
The swimming club, another asset
The training stretches over ten months. And above all, it takes place exclusively in the chlorinated waters of Thionville and Metz. This proximity to these future basin managers forges a strong bond between the two parties: “We give them the desire to stay”, as Bernard Veinnant, mayor of Basse-Ham and vice-president of Portes de France-Thionville, nicely puts it. It is therefore no coincidence that the latest recruit to date, for the record, from the ranks of the national gendarmerie, comes from the last promotion 2022-2023.
Finally, another advantage makes it possible to reinforce the seduction potential of the sector. It is due to the bridge established with the Sporting-Club Thionvillois, the flagship formation of Lorraine swimming with its some 2,000 members: “This offers lifeguards the possibility of supervising aquatic activities”.
Or the prospect of boosting a low salary at the start of a career, settling “around €1,300”.
