A unique recording of the song Blowin’ In The Wind by the American singer and writer Bob Dylan has raised more than 1.7 million euros at an auction in London.

That is more than the barely 1 million euros that the auction house Christie’s counted on for the signed plate, which is stored in a wooden box.

Dylan recorded the song with a band last year using a new technique; the so-called ionic original. Among other things, a new coating and a different material than the traditional vinyl have been used, which should guarantee a better quality.

It was Dylan’s first new recording of Blowin’ In The Wind since 1962. In that year, 20-year-old Dylan wrote the song in about ten minutes in a cafe in New York.

It went on to become one of the most iconic songs of all time. Because of the rhetorical questions about peace, war and freedom, the song became an anthem of civil rights and peace movements in the US in the 1960s. In the decades since, it has been covered by numerous artists.

Dylan’s former guitarist and producer T Bone Burnett took the initiative for the recording. He said to the BBC that he experienced the re-recording as a “holy moment”. “I think we did it in one take,” he said.

Burnett further said he sees it as an art project, with which he hopes to start a new trend in music land. “We’re only making one, because we see it as the equivalent of a painting.”

The recording was only heard in a few listening sessions in New York, Los Angeles and London, organized for interested buyers. It is now up to the buyer of the recording whether it will ever be shared with the general public.

Burnett said he re-recorded more songs with Dylan in the same studio session. What he will do with it, he would let depend on the auction of the Blowin’ In The Wind-intake.
