Unique! Mysterious Sign Phenomenon on the Surface of Mars in the Shape of Zigzag Polygons
JAKARTA, kilat.com- A strange image, clicked and shared by the High-Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) camera above Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, showing a polygon-shaped mark on the surface of the red planet.
This mysterious phenomenon appears when Mars witnesses spring. The photo depicts a patchwork network of white zigzags on the planet’s surface at high latitudes.
It also shows the occasional spray of black and blue mist forming between these patches. Polygons are formed when water ice, frozen on the ground, splits them apart. In the spring, the edges of these polygons crack as surface ice turns to gas due to sublimation, according to researchers from the University of Arizona, who manage the spacecraft in Mars orbit.
In a statement, the HiRISE team said, “The erosion of the channel that forms the polygon boundary by dry ice sublimation in the spring adds a lot of twists and turns.” The translucent layer of dry ice, which covers the surface, develops vents to allow gases to escape.
This gas also carries fine particles of material from the surface to further erode the channel.

“The particles fall to the surface in fan-shaped dark deposits. Sometimes, the dark particles sink into the dry ice, leaving a bright trail where the fan was originally deposited,” added the University. (nda)
