Unique discovery: plant remains found in Greenland

Greenland was a “living” island

Researchers suggest that there was once life and trees on the island. They also say that Greenland is not as resilient to climate change as previously thought.

Scientists have discovered the remains of plants in Greenland, which have survived under a huge layer of ice. This was reported on March 15 at website University of Vermont USA.

“New research proves that a thick layer of ice at Camp Century, found 120 km off the coast and 1,300 km from the North Pole, has completely melted at least once in the last million years. It has become covered in plants: moss, grass and even trees,” – the message says.

Plant samples were found in 1966 while on a US military island at Camp Century. The servicemen drilled the ice to a depth of one and a half kilometers to hide 600 nuclear missiles there, but took out a core. Its length reached four and a half meters. After that, the find passed from one laboratory to another.

University of Vermont researcher Andrew Christ, during microscopic observation, found clear branches and leaves on the remains of plants. This indicates that there was a forest, probably coniferous-broad-leaved, at the place where the ice sheet was formed.

Scientists also argue that this study proves the sensitivity of Greenland to climatic influences, which can provoke a fairly rapid melting of glaciers.

Recall last fall on the island the largest glacier cracked, which plays an important role in the formation of the Arctic climate of Greenland.
