Nostalgia appears and life smiles at us a little more, since Christmas is a sign of festivity, family warmth and an upcoming closure that will give rise to the beginning of a new year. Christmas Eve, owner of twinkling lights, is the perfect occasion to bring the whole family together with traditions that have been maintained from generation to generation.

However, each home decides to celebrate it in its own style. And, in the world of celebrity, these traditions can take an unexpected turn, taking extravagance and wonder to new limits. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds in pajamas wouldn’t be proud. Without a doubt, the following 10 unusual Christmas traditions of celebrities are a reflection of their unique lifestyles.

Without a doubt, the undisputed and absolute sovereign of Christmas is the iconic Mariah Carey, with a reign that remains intact and promises to stay for a long time to come. Topping the list, the American diva has managed to become a Christmas reference every year thanks to her megahit “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, with thousands of followers waiting for her unique welcomes to the festive seasons, Christmas tours and special appearances.

As such, in addition to listening to her own classic, the singer always dresses up as Mother Christmas and goes on a getaway through the snow of Aspen with her 12-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, and her family. In an interview with Redbook magazine, Carey revealed her ritual: “Depending on how many people are in Aspen, we take one or two horse-drawn sleighs, bundle up, and go for a walk in the snow under the stars. “We always drink cocoa with caramel liquor to warm up and sing at the top of our lungs.”

Eating turkey or suckling pig for the famous Jonas Brothers youth trio, including their younger brother Frankie, would be too predictable. However, no one would imagine that Kevin, Joe and Nick’s family, despite having Italian ancestry, adopt a completely Latin American custom for the big day of Christmas. Instead of a traditional Christmas menu, it is characteristic of the Jonas to have nothing less than tamales for breakfast in the mornings.

The least of the trio of singers, Nick Jonas, confessed to InStyle the tradition that remains generation after generation. “Every year we eat tamales on Christmas morning and it’s great. My mom started doing it and it’s special because Kevin, Joe and I grew up doing it. It is very much our thing to eat tamales at Christmas,” he explained about the dish of pre-Columbian origin, made from corn or rice and wrapped with vegetable leaves such as banana leaves. Another celebrity who has shared her penchant for tamales on Christmas Day is Eva Longoria.

For the former first lady of the United States, it is important that one of her family’s Christmas traditions during her childhood prevails in hers: acquiring Christmas gifts under a meritocratic criterion, something unusual for any child. But Michelle Obama wanted to make sure to preserve her humble roots, despite the privileges or opulence she now enjoys.

In a conversation with Ladies’ Home Journal, Obama revealed what his austere Christmas used to be like and how his family managed to have a good time, despite their limited resources. “Our family was so large that we couldn’t afford to buy gifts for everyone. So two of my aunts went out to buy small gifts. They put them in a basket and, to get a gift, you had to show off. You could tell a joke, read a poem, do a cartwheel… whatever. It is a tradition that we maintain today,” he confessed.

Her husband, former President Barack Obama, was one of those who put in the most effort, as Michelle said that she usually gets her gifts by singing songs.

Blake Lively is in favor of giving free rein to laziness and one of life’s great pleasures on Christmas Eve: resting and simply enjoying a cozy moment with her loved ones, including her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds. If you can afford that, welcome!

Unabashedly, the “Gossip Girl” star revealed the details of the particular tradition she shares with the “Deadpool” star and the four children they share together. “I don’t know how we do it, but we all get into the same bed. Somehow we can spend up to seven hours there, chatting with each other,” she said in an interview with The Kit.

Once the intimate pajama ritual is over, the Reynolds family always makes sure to prepare a luxurious and extravagant banquet for their long-awaited Christmas dinner, as it includes up to 12 courses. They do enjoy the good life during their Christmas celebrations.

In contrast to some celebrities on this list, luxury is what has always characterized the festivities of the Kardashian-Jenner empire. And Christmas could not be the exception, since they usually celebrate it throughout the month of December. But it usually brings with it controversial traditions that could be questionable for many.

Despite the disagreements and public disagreements that have characterized their relationship over the last year, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian have always been two main figures in the family’s Christmas celebrations, with Kourtney as the great hostess and center of attention on Christmas Eve.

Their distinctive customs include choosing the same pajamas for everyone and assigning a unique type of wrapping paper for each one. “This way you know who gave you what and it’s a fun representation of their style,” Kim revealed. In fact, she herself has taken the holiday spirit to the next level this 2023, installing a total of 12 Christmas trees at her Los Angeles mansion.

The tradition of this pair of Hollywood outsiders is that there is no tradition. That is to say, gifts are not part of Christmas in the family formed by Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. So, apparently, her children are going to have a hard time.

The acting couple, who had previously sparked debate for their peculiar approach to bathing their children only when necessary, maintain a strict educational line also at Christmas time. Kunis, famous for her role in “The 70s Show,” revealed in 2017 that she, along with Kutcher, decided not to give her sons, Wyatt and Dimitri, gifts for Christmas. This once again generated controversy and negative comments, so she had to clarify that they were only given a single gift and that they warned their relatives to do the same. Otherwise, they would be donated to charity.

This is an eccentric Christmas like few others, in which fast food seems to be one of the best allies. Singer John Legend and his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, have broken all the molds of the classic Christmas turkey tradition, opting for different flavors to celebrate these holidays: hamburgers and fries.

As the “All Of Me” singer revealed in an interview with The Receipt, Teigen has established the habit of ordering McDonald’s at Christmas within her family, a choice that shows her preference for alternatives to the typical Christmas dinner. “It’s a Chrissy tradition,” she said.

In addition to fast-food indulgences, when they decide not to opt for the convenience of a burger and fries, the Legend-Teigens turn to another meat dish: Beef Wellington, which has been designated as the main dish on their dinner table. Christmas, thus marking a new culinary tradition for the couple and their children.

Award-winning American actress Sandra Bullock takes advantage of the Christmas season to honor her European origins. Every New Year’s Eve, for the “Bird Box” star it is almost an obligation to add a good dose of Bavarian German sausages and sauerkraut to Christmas dinner, as a tribute to the memory of his ancestors from Germany. However, Bullock stated that it is not always so easy to obtain them. Before her mother died, she was the one who provided them.

“Since he died, I think we broke the law because we have to figure out how to get those sausages and apparently bringing meat into the United States is illegal,” he said in an interview with People magazine.

Furthermore, true to her comic style and personality, the Oscar winner usually delights the little ones every year by dressing up as Santa Claus and doing a peculiar performance as if she were breaking into the house to deliver the gifts.

The eternal Elle Woods of “Legally Blonde” has shown that she is still a girl at heart who lives Christmas to the fullest. Instead of following the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree, Reese Witherspoon has developed her own quirky tradition worthy of a Hollywood actress: she dresses her Oscar statuette in winter accessories.

In an interview with the BBC, the 47-year-old actress commented with humor that, every Christmas, she proudly wears her award wrapped in a hat and scarf, thus ensuring that she participates in the Christmas spirit and “does not get cold.”

In addition, Reese Witherspoon is in favor of maintaining the family and loving essence of Christmas, focusing more on coexistence than on the materialism of gifts. With a policy of moderation very much in the style of Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, she firmly believes that opulence is not necessary. “I’m a little strict about this kind of thing. I think kids do best when they only have two or three things they really like. I try to avoid gluttony. They don’t enjoy it as much. When they only have one or two things, they really appreciate them,” she said.

The Dawson’s Creek star’s family can take pride in having a sporting Christmas every year. Tom Cruise’s ex-partner carries out a less conventional and more physically active celebration, establishing his own version: a family race to burn calories on Christmas Eve.

“Many years ago my father started the tradition of going running in the park. It is a five-kilometer race that we call ‘the turkey trot’ and there is even a prize for the winner, which I have never won,” he revealed during an interview on Jimmy Fallon’s program, The Tonight Show.
