It is very much our thing to eat tamales at Christmas,” he explained about the dish of pre-Columbian origin, made from corn or rice and wrapped with vegetable leaves such as banana leaves. For the former first lady of the United States, it is important that one of her family’s Christmas traditions during her childhood prevails in hers: acquiring Christmas gifts under a meritocratic criterion, something unusual for any child. But Michelle Obama wanted to make sure to preserve her humble roots, despite the privileges or opulence she now enjoys.

In a conversation with Ladies’ Home Journal, Obama revealed what his austere Christmas used to be like and how his family managed to have a good time, despite their limited resources. “Our family was so large that we couldn’t afford to buy gifts for everyone. So two of my aunts went out to buy small gifts. They put them in a basket and, to get a gift, you had to show off. You could tell a joke, read a poem, do a cartwheel… whatever. It is a tradition that we maintain today,” he confessed.
