Call it a gap in the market, where two creatives stepped in at the same time: Amsterdam Christmas baubles. Maren from de Jordaan incorporates pieces of the Westertoren into her decorations, and Doortje from de Pijp sells symbols of the contemporary yup for the tree. “If you had ever told me that I would later have a successful Christmas ball company, I would have really laughed at you.”

Maren Elema’s webshop is actually a logical continuation of what she has been doing for years: making quirky Christmas decorations. “When I’m on holiday, I take souvenirs with me and put them in transparent Christmas baubles.” She provides them with a date. “When I decorate the tree, it is an annual moment of reflection for me. To reminisce.”
In 2022, Maren will already make the leap from hobbyist to professional. “I responded to an ideas competition in Utrecht. They asked for ideas on how residual material from the Cathedral could best be reused.” In Christmas baubles of course, Maren thought. Her Utrecht Christmas baubles were a great success.
And then Maren sees the Westertoren in scaffolding in her own neighborhood. She asks the municipality if she can use the stones from the tower. “And before I knew it I had nine buckets of Westertoren pieces in my house.”
The first orders have now been received. “The Westerkerk sells them, and you can also buy them in my own webshop.” Maren donates part of the proceeds to Het Blauwe Fonds, a foundation that works on LGBTIQ+ emancipation through projects.

Doortje Kruisheer is also entering her second year as a Christmas ball seller. But she focused on the Amsterdam market from the start. “It started with the sattie,” she says in her apartment in De Pijp. A sattie is yuppie jargon for a well-known sex toy. Last year Doortje and her boyfriend sold a sattie Christmas ball. “That was a cult hit at the time, we also received videos of girls unpacking it and then having to explain to the family what it was!”
The success left me wanting more. “I have a styling background myself and my boyfriend studied business administration. So this comes together nicely.” Not that Doortje ever expected to be working full-time on Christmas stuff: her webshop is working overtime. “We are already working on next year’s collection. But if you had told me a few years ago: soon you and your friend will have a successful Christmas bauble company, I would have really laughed at you. But it is really fun.”
