“Unique Choir for Latvia’s Birthday Concert in Kuldīga” – Tradition, Passion, and National Pride

After several singing exercises, the specially prepared song books are opened, which contain 14 popular not only choral, but also popular music songs. Creating a unique choir for Latvia’s birthday concert in Kuldīga is already becoming a tradition, as it will appear in front of the audience for the third time.

“Every year, I am happy for those who come directly from the outside and dare to test their abilities and improve their skills together with those who are already real choir singers. After last year, there were several singers who went to sing in choirs, and it is such , I think, is a great benefit for the whole society,” explains Andra Zvejniece, the artistic director of the concert.

“It is love for my work, love for the song, love for the country I live in. It is the work of the heart. Thank you that I have also been entrusted with two songs in the concert. I will do it with all my heart,” says Jana, one of the choir conductors. Pipe.

Ieva Siliņa, a pediatrician at the Kuldīga hospital, admits that singing is her passion, but there is not enough time for it every day. She applied for the opportunity to feel the power of the choir on the national holiday last year, but she was unable to attend the rehearsals due to work.

“Actually, I’ve been singing all my life, since I can remember. Already in kindergarten, I was led to some kind of “Knīpai und knaukais”. I also graduated from a music school in Riga, so music has been with me all my life,” says the choir member.

Kopkora members are here not only from Kuldīga region, but also from Liepāja, Ādaži, Ventspils and Aizpute. Justus Údris is connected with singing on a daily basis, but he started singing in the choir this year: “I want to feel the feeling of a collective choir and the fine feeling of enjoying Latvian holidays in this way. I think that is the most Latvian thing that can be – to sing on Latvian holidays.”

One of the soloists of the concert, Ance Jankovska, on the other hand, admits: “Once upon a time, I would have thought about how to sing a song more technically correctly, according to academic knowledge, how it could be done better. I must say – in recent years, I have been trying to convey more the meaning of the song itself. To that person, when he hears this song, lives the story that the composer wanted to pass on to him when he wrote this song.”

This year, the collective choir will delight the audience in two concerts in Skrunda and Kuldīga, when the voices of more than 100 members will unite in the songs. And that’s more than last year.

Andra Zvejniece, the artistic director of the concert, does not hide: “I am glad that I have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays again and again through the fact that I am in front, everyone is together, we can all sing and that I see this emotion, their contribution, I see that people have tears of emotion in rehearsals.”
