Unique and Theatrical Hotels in New York City

The most theatrical: the Civilian Hotel

Past the doors of this pretty brick building, there is a cozy haven imagined by architect David Rockwell, in a spirit paying homage to the Broadway district (and more precisely Hell’s Kitchen) and its theaters, in a vintage spirit mixed with industrial winks. The rooms have been designed like a private dressing room, with their velvet benches, their stage spotlights with adjustable brightness, their old posters. On site, a restaurant (the Rosevale & Secret Garden) offers the full range of “American bistro” locavore version, such as this Thai-style steak tartare or this burger made from grilled pork belly (from a New York producer). Jersey), garnished with gruyere, mushrooms, truffle aioli, watercress and marinated shallots. It can be eaten alone and without guilt.

Going up to the second floor, the Royal Blue Room bar has the look of a clandestine speakeasy. In this cozy universe, we will sip a “Mr Lee Manhattan” created by mixologist Francesco Lafranconi while listening to a regular play a jazz tune on the piano. The gaze becomes curious in front of windows displaying original costumes and other objects linked to cult musicals like “Hadestown”, “Slave Play”, “Moulin Rouge” or “Cabaret”…

WE love : the 27th floor rooftop with a view of the lights of Manhattan, offering a happy hour with guest DJ.

Le plus rockabilly : le Hard Rock Hotel

Opened in the heart of Midtown Manhattan in 2022, a stone’s throw from the famous Radio City Music Hall, this establishment pays homage to Music Row, a neighborhood that was for nearly a century, and until the early 2000s, the temple music. Along this 48th street, countless artists came to record, rehearse, stock up on musical instruments from the many shops that populated it: Miles Davis, Sinatra, Fats Domino and above all all the rock legends like Dylan, the Rolling Stones, or Pink Floyd. The list is long and easily rivals a Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame entry casting.

The last guitar store closed its doors in 2015, but at the Hard Rock Hotel we celebrate this heritage. The design is signed by the architect Jeffrey Beers, who did not skimp on beautiful materials and cultivates the effect of surprise. We are welcomed by an impressive marble staircase which gives the illusion of being held by guitar strings, as if in levitation. Nothing discreet here. Everything is oversized and a bit flashy. But fans can head straight to the RT 60 lounge bar on the 34th floor, where a leather motorcycle jacket worn by Joey Ramone, a pair of Lady Gaga’s patent leather boots or handwritten lyrics by John Lennon are on display. The hotel even has its own club, called The Venue on Music Row, which hosts concerts.

WE love : the decor of the rooms, the moonlit yoga session on the roof and the possibility of renting a Fender guitar to strum notes in your room.

Le plus melting-pot : le Moxy Williamsburg

(DAVID COWAN)

It is on Bedford Avenue, in the heart of the trendy Williamsburg district whose cool and trendy spirit has traveled the world, that the Moxy brand was established in 2023. Very spirit happy few for this new hotel on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge, facing the Manhattan skyline. The ultra-careful interior architecture, signed by the Californian firm Basile Studio, gives pride of place to contemporary design mixed with street art spirit. Here, tourists and locals mingle at the bar, where cocktails were created by the Broken Shaker collective, a famous Miami counter.

Hip-hop turns 50: guided tour of New York, where it all began

In the evening, the mixologists put on a show in front of a huge liquor cabinet six meters high with motorized shelves that go up and down… Wow effect guaranteed. On the dining side, Mesiba is inspired by the Bauhaus architecture of Tel Aviv and offers a beautiful menu with influences from Levantine cuisine. Other assets of the place, a festive club called Jolene (in homage to Dolly Parton’s emblematic song) equipped by the famous New York DJ Nicolas Mater.

WE love : the melting-pot atmosphere (locals, tourists, creatives from all backgrounds), the coworking studios, and on the rooftop the pretty Balinese-inspired Lillistar bar where you relax in hand-crafted wooden armchairs lit by lighting fixtures resembling giant lotus flowers.
