Uniper wants to build a green hydrogen factory in the port of Rotterdam

Uniper’s hydrogen plant is to be located next to the company’s current coal-fired power station. From 2025, it should be produced with a capacity of 100 megawatts. By then, the factory should also be connected to the hydrogen pipeline in the port.

According to Uniper, the Maasvlakte is a suitable location for a green hydrogen factory because of its proximity to the North Sea wind farms. Good agreements about the power supplies are essential for the project.

The same applies to financial support from the government. “Green hydrogen cannot compete with gray hydrogen yet,” said a Uniper spokesperson. “Serious amounts need to be added from the government for the start-up.”

Until there are promises about this, it is not certain whether the factory will be built. “The intention, wish and will is there,” says the spokesman about the factory. “But all the pieces of the puzzle still have to fall into place. It should be clear at the end of next year whether that will work. Then we will make the decision whether to make the investment or not.”
