“Unions Protest at National Refoundation Council Seminar in Draguignan”

Something was secretly preparing in front of the sub-prefecture of Draguignan at 11 a.m., this Thursday, April 13. The representatives of the various local unions were placed quietly at the head of the line.

When suddenly, when setting off on Boulevard Clemenceau, the speakers shout:

The procession will not stop at the end of Avenue Lazare-Carnot. He will go as far as in front of the entrance to the Chabran cultural centre.

In fact, elected officials from Dracénie, Verdon, prefect and sub-prefect of Var participate all morning in a seminar of the National Refoundation Council.

“We are going to be heard”, justifies Gilles Piazzoli at the microphone, the general secretary of the local CGT union.

On the way to the auditorium, the demonstrators (700 according to the police, 1,200 according to the local union of the CGT) sing, dance.

Access prohibited for about thirty minutes

Then, arriving on the site, change of atmosphere. The voices rise even louder. “Withdraw, withdraw, withdraw from reform!”

The speakers spit out the music at their maximum volume. Firecrackers explode. The crowd presses against the police, lined up to block access to the room.

For about thirty minutes, the public is prohibited from entering or leaving the site. The doors remain closed.

New gathering scheduled for Friday, April 14

The procession waits. Until 12:30 p.m. “Where is he, where is Mr. Prefect?”

Time continues to pass, and no one points the tip of their nose. The demonstrators then disperse, leave the rally. And no one will have seen either the elected officials or the prefect.

A new rally is scheduled for Friday, April 14, at 6 p.m. in front of the sub-prefecture of Draguignan.
