Union Berlin has to do without top striker Taiwo Awoniyi at the beginning of the second half of the Bundesliga. The 24-year-old, who has scored nine goals in the first 17 games of the season, is in Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup in Cameroon (January 9th to February 6th). Defender Jamilu Collins from SC Paderborn is also nominated from the 2nd Bundesliga.
Union hurts the goalscorer’s journey. Before Christmas, coach Urs Fischer told Bild-Zeitung: “I would allow the player to do it, but it wouldn’t help us.” Awoniyi made his debut for the Super Eagles in October under the now dismissed coach Gernot Rohr.
The Africa Cup was supposed to take place at the beginning of 2021, but was postponed for a year due to the corona pandemic. Nigeria meets Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau in the group. The first game will be against Egypt on January 11th, and Union will play against Bayer Leverkusen three days earlier at the start of the second half of the season.
