Union has suffered a bitter defeat at home. Vice champion Racing Genk could not convince for ninety minutes, but took the three points from the Dudenpark thanks to an early goal from newcomer Andi Zeqiri and a late one from Matias Galarza. Union had plenty of opportunities to avert defeat, but could not get the ball in.
Union – Genk in a nutshell:
Man of the match: A debut that you can only dream of. In his first match for Genk, Zeqiri immediately scored the most important goal of the game. For the rest, the Brighton signing fought a war with Burgess in vain, but that is not what the supporters will remember after tonight.
Honorable mention: The man of the match is not necessarily the best player on the pitch. That role was reserved for Amani Lazare. The tireless midfielder constantly appeared at the back of the Genk defense. He could easily have had three assists to his name.
Striking: Although Union created a truckload of chances – 25 in total – it only aimed 4 times between the posts. It was in stark contrast to Genk, who also scored twice with two shots on target.
KRC Genk entered the international match with a scoring problem, but “efficiency” was the only thing the visitors could really rely on – after a weak first half – against Union.
Thanks to new striker, Andi Zeqiri.
The visitors were completely crushed by a strong Union in the initial phase, but – like a bolt from the blue – Brighton’s new signing still gave the visitors the opening goal after twenty minutes. He did receive the 0-1 on a tray from Paintsil.
The first of many for Zeqiri?
But Union was not at all affected. The home team dominated the midfield and continued to dominate the match. It created chance after chance, but the busy Puertas and co could not get the ball between the posts.
The verdict: 25 shots, only 4 between the posts and 0 goals.
To make matters worse, Matias Galarza also opened his account for Genk. In the very last minute he poked home a rebound from substitute Tolu. The balance at Genk: 2 shots on target, 2 goals.
How things can turn out. Union entered the international match as a fast-scoring and unbeatable home team, but – after a frustrating match – saddled themselves with a scoring problem.
Vrancken: “We made it difficult for ourselves”
Wouter Vrancken (Genk): “This was a flattering victory. But after the previous matches, that’s okay. We deserved it there, but we didn’t get it. Now it was the other way around. That’s okay, actually. We made it very difficult for ourselves. Union put a lot of pressure on us and forced us to make mistakes. Fortunately, we fought for every bit of ground. And we, and not them, were very efficient. The roles were reversed there too. Ours too. New striker Zeqiri gave positive signals. He tried very hard and showed the right energy in his game. He did everything for the team and still has a lot of room for growth.”
Blessin: “This defeat is hard to believe”
Alexander Blessin (Union): “Football can sometimes be very unfair. Because we really played a very good match today. And not only the numbers show that. I also saw a team that poured its heart into this match. We simply missed a goal. We wanted to, but of course you have to get the ball on the frame. It is difficult to believe and accept that we are not getting any points, but we have to learn from this. Today we may be frustrated, but the European match against Toulouse is at the door again.”

second half, minute 68. Changing of the guard. Blessin realizes that something also needs to change at Union. It no longer produces the number of chances as in the first half. The coach of the home team therefore does not take half measures and sends an extra attacker onto the field. Nilsson and Amoura can turn the tide. Leysen and Eckert are sacrificed. .

Yellow card for Joseph Paintsil of KRC Genk during the second half, minute 51. Second half, minute 50. The face of the match did not change after the break. Union continues to monopolize the ball, partly thanks to a lot of carelessness by the visitors. And yet we still have to watch out for the counter-attack from the Genk team. This way, Zeqiri can once again build in the large rectangle, but this time Genk’s new striker cracks his shot completely. .
