A blanket zero rate for wages is neither useful nor necessary, believes the trade union umbrella organization.

The trade union umbrella organization Travail Suisse is demanding wage increases despite the corona crisis: A blanket zero round is neither useful nor necessary. A wage increase is indicated in sectors that have come through the crisis relatively unscathed.

Short-time work was important in order to secure wages and income and thus prevent the corona crisis from becoming directly existential for employees, it was said on Thursday at the media conference of Travail Suisse and its member organizations Syna, Hotel & Gastro Union and Transfair in Bern. However, the wage replacement rate of 80 percent for short-time working and 70 percent for unemployment led to significant loss of income.

This leads to a loss of purchasing power and a decline in consumption – which further exacerbates the crisis. A wage increase in “several industries” is therefore economically necessary as a support for consumption, the associations demanded, among other things. In addition, the public service should also be strengthened, because this is of existential importance in overcoming the crisis. Also to be avoided is the acceptance of the initiative “For moderate immigration” (limitation initiative) – according to Travail Suisse “a European hara-kiri”.
