New Delhi – The Union Sports Ministry has suspended the governing body of the wrestling federation. The decisive action is taking place at a time when the protest of the wrestlers is getting stronger. The new governing body of the federation was elected last day. Brijbhushan Sharan Singh’s follower Sanjay Singh was elected as the new president of the federation.
There was widespread protest against Brijbhushan’s confidant becoming the chairman. Wrestler Sakshi Malik has announced that he is ending his career. Stars including Bajrang Punia came out against the selection of Sanjay Singh. Sanjay Singh won the election by securing 40 out of 47 votes.
The wrestlers are protesting demanding action against Brij Bhushan, the accused in the sexual assault case. Commonwealth Games gold medalist Anita Shoren, contested by protesting wrestlers for the post of president of the wrestling federation, got just seven votes. Wrestling stars Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia expressed their disappointment with the election results.
The former president of the federation and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had told the Delhi Palace court that whenever he got an opportunity, he harassed women wrestlers. A charge sheet was filed against Brij Bhushan in the sexual assault case filed by the wrestlers. The Punjab-Haryana High Court canceled the National Federation elections, which were scheduled to be held on August 11.
Elections were opened after the Supreme Court quashed the Punjab-Haryana High Court stay order. Sanjay Singh has also served as the Vice President of Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Federation. Part of the last Executive Council of WFI and its Joint Secretary since 2019.
