Union Raises Obstetrics Safety Issues at Chandler Hospital

In a statement released on Wednesday, SIIIEQ criticizes the governance of cISS, arguing that problems have persisted at the hospital for several months. According to its president, Pier-Luc Bujold, the lack of personnel is obvious, causing a significant work overload.

We are constantly asking to do more. We have nurses, in recent weeks, who have done 70, 80, 90 or even 100 hours in a single week. It just doesn’t make sense anymore!

The SIIIEQ has 11 members in the obstetrics department in Chandler; three would be in maternity and three others, on sick leave. According to the union, a minimum of six nurses would however be necessary per 24-hour period.

The concern would also be at its height, according to Pier-Luc Bujold, with the approach of the summer holidays. People tell us that it is clear that they will not get through the summer, that they are going to get sick, that they are going to go elsewhere. They can’t go through this anymore, live this, launches the union leader.

Mr. Bujold adds that nurses would be left alone with patients in labor and that birth inductions would be scheduled when the shift schedule is incomplete.

Always according to the SIIIEQ, the cISS would not comply with its contingency plan. Pier-Luc Bujold defends that the regional health network refuses to admit its inability to offer a service hors pair on certain shifts. According to him, transfers should be considered to other Gaspé hospitals.

The union says it has repeatedly requested that a meeting be organized with the members, the nursing directorate and the professional services directorate. According to Mr. Bujold, these attempts have so far remained dead letter.

Pier-Luc Bujold maintains that the Deputy Minister of Health was questioned by the MP for Bonaventure, Sylvain Roy. As a result, more mandatory overtime would have been ordered late yesterday. so that there are people at all times.

The president of the SIIIEQ intends to sound the alarm with the Auditor General of Quebec, Guylaine Leclerc. An audit is underway regarding the administrative management of the cISS Gaspesian.

Everything is done according to the rules of the art, says the cISS

The Director of Professional Services at cISS of the Gaspé, Dre Nathalie Guilbault, is surprised by the allegations of SIIIEQ and defends that there is no security issue at Chandler’s obstetrics department.

Everything is done according to the rules of the art, for my part.

In an interview with Radio-Canada on Wednesday, the one who is also acting deputy general manager indicated that she was not aware of the problematic situations listed by the union.

It is certain that sometimes, there can be illnesses and work stoppages for different reasons and that can upset the schedules that have already been put in place., she admits nonetheless.

Dre Guilbault maintains that the cISS Gaspésien is turning over all the stones in order to hire new resources, but recruitment remains a challenge.

It’s not easy, I grant you, because people need vacations and need to do a job in the best possible conditions, but I would tell you that the problem that is currently being experienced [au niveau du] lack of human resources, this is something that is experienced throughout Quebec, says the manager.

According to her, no break in service is envisaged in the obstetrics department of the Chandler hospital center. The cISS will not hesitate, reassure Dre Guilbault, to order transfers if patient safety was compromised by the lack of resources in place.

A service corridor and a contingency plan are provided for this purpose and will be applied. If the need arises from time to time, it is certain that it will be used at that time, she assures, adding that the current situation does not require such measures.

Without being able to get ahead of the deadlines, Dre Guilbault mentions that a meeting will be scheduled in the short term with the team of SIIIEQ to discuss the prevailing situation in the obstetrics department of the Chandler Hospital Center.
