The winning streak of the footballers of 1. FC Union Berlin in the 2nd women’s Bundesliga is broken. On Sunday afternoon, the Köpenick women lost 1:2 (0:1) against Eintracht Frankfurt II. After four wins and two draws, it is the first league defeat of the season. The last time the Iron Ladies suffered a competitive defeat was a year and a half ago.
Head coach Ailien Poese was unable to be at the An der Alten Försterei stadium due to illness. Assistant coach Sven Gruel represented them on the sidelines and had to watch as his team fell behind early on. Union goalkeeper Cara Bösl got to the ball, but was unable to fend off Johanna Berg’s shot (10th). After the break, Ela Demirbas increased the score for the guests (65′). Antonia Halverkamps scored the next goal shortly afterwards (71′), but the equalizer failed to materialize.
As a result of the defeat, the Union women, who still have 14 points in their account, have to give up the league lead on the seventh matchday. 1. FC Nürnberg (16) and VfL Bochum (15) pass them.
In a week the Iron Ladies will continue in the 2nd Women’s Bundesliga. On October 20th they will be guests at FC Ingolstadt 04. Kick-off at the Mitte district sports facility is at 11 a.m. Union will play at home again on November 3rd. The opponent on matchday 9 is SV Meppen.
