Union Berlin is annoying BVB – and Kevin Vogt can actually still score goals

As of: October 5th, 2024 7:17 p.m

In the Bundesliga, Kevin Vogt from 1. FC Union Berlin went 3,640 days without a goal, almost ten years – no outfield player in Bundesliga history waited longer without scoring. Now Vogt scored against Borussia Dortmund – which is also why Union surprisingly won 2:1 (2:0).

It was the 26th minute when Union Berlin received a penalty after a foul by Nico Schlotterbach on Benedict Hollerbach and Kevin Vogt grabbed the ball. Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel pointed his finger to the left corner as he saw it – and that’s exactly where Vogt shot the ball.

A simple penalty – goals like this often occur in the Bundesliga. And yet it was a goal that will not be quickly forgotten.

Because scoring goals is not one of the footballer Vogt’s strengths. In his 341st Bundesliga game he only scored for the fourth time. “I can’t explain that,” said Vogt in an interview with Sportschau. “I don’t have any arguments.” So this is how the longest goalless streak by an outfield player in the history of the Bundesliga ended.

When Vogt, 33, last scored, he was not yet a veteran, but a young player. He didn’t play for Union yet, he played for 1. FC Köln. That was almost ten years ago, when he defeated Roman Weidenfeller. One thing hasn’t changed: he prefers to score goals against Dortmund. He has now scored three of his four goals against BVB.

Vertessen also scores for Union

Vogt made the story of this game, which was over for him after just over an hour. As a precautionary measure, coach Bo Svensson replaced Vogt, who had already been warned, and Leopold Querfeld came in for him.

At this point, Union was already leading by two goals after Yorbe Vertessen had also been successful. It was the 45th minute when Vertessen shot low and powerfully from the edge of the penalty area after a corner. Goalkeeper Kobel’s view was obscured, so he had no chance of defending.

Dortmund is getting stronger – but it only hits Ryerson

Vogt watched from the bench as his team came under pressure. How BVB became stronger and had its best chances to date thanks to Maximilian Baier. But Baier initially completed a counterattack from close range that was too unplaced (55th), before he shot two meters past the goal from around 16 meters to the right (58th).

When Dortmund did score a goal shortly afterwards, the goalscorer was not an offensive player. Right-back Julian Ryerson, who played for 1. FC Union for four and a half years until January 2023, was hit. A pass from Julian Brandt reached him. Ryerson then ran two or three meters before shooting low through the legs of Berlin’s Danilho Doekhi and into the far corner (62′).

BVB rewarded themselves with this goal – and somehow not. Coach Nuri Şahin’s team was unable to score a second goal. “It’s obvious that we didn’t play well in the first half,” said Dortmund coach Nuri Şahin in an interview with Sportschau. “If the results remain as they are now, we will not be able to achieve our goals.”

It’s not just Şahin who won’t like the look at the Bundesliga table. After their second defeat of the season, Dortmund only have 10 points after six games, which is one less than their opponents from Berlin. “The boys did very well,” said Bo Svensson, the coach of 1. FC Union, to the Sportschau. “I’m very happy with the performance.”

BVB will play St. Pauli after the international break

Şahin’s Dortmund team have the chance to make amends after the international break, when their opponents are FC St. Pauli (October 18th, 8:30 p.m.). Union Berlin has to play in Kiel two days later (October 20th, 3:30 p.m.).
