Unió Musical Band Tarragona: 30 Years of Musical Excellence and Social Impact

If Tarragona has a soundtrack, this is the Unió Musical Band, without a doubt. The spirit of integration, collective entity and desire to improve each year have placed it among the Tarragona entities with the greatest and best projection in recent years. Today it has a force of more than 200 musicians among the four groups that make it up: in addition to the symphonic band, there is the children’s band, the youth band and the BigBand BUMT. A top-level group that brings together music, social activities and the integration of all ages. With this they have come, this 2023, to celebrate the 30 years of life of the Band, which are many.

«In the future we will continue offering all types of music, we know how to reinvent ourselves»

Albert Baiget

President of the BUMT

“The BUMT is a musical and social entity for our musicians, but we cannot lose sight of the fact that people come here altruistically and selflessly. There are amateur musicians and others who are more advanced, but reaching the age of thirty is a great effort,” he explains. the director of the group, Jordi Masip, just before the last rehearsal.

On December 15, they starred in the Nadal Concert that put an end to the celebration of the three decades. The rehearsal, as always, is on the ground floor of the bus station, a discreet place but far from the hustle and bustle, motors and suitcases of the city center. “Since the founding of the Band, hundreds of musicians have dedicated their time to it, and continuing at the forefront thirty years later says a lot about us,” comments the current president of the BUMT, Albert Baiget, who highlights the “good state of health” of the musical group.

Nadal’s Concert was the last event of the BUMT to celebrate its 30th anniversary

On a musical level, the Band’s contribution to Tarragona is undeniable, as it is also on a social level, with an endless calendar of events that make it present on a daily basis. Especially during the Santa Tecla festivities, when it can be seen and heard among pasodobles, marches and traditional works. A ‘teclera’ presence that earned them, in September 2022, the valuable title of Perpetuator for their precious contribution to the Festes de Santa Tecla.

Among the four groups and so many musicians, it is common to find them younger or more veteran: «People with interests in music, come! With little or much training, at BUMT there is a space for everyone,” invited Neus Vendrell, one of the members of the group. You don’t need to have been to all the sections to enjoy the music. And the BUMT has emerged as the environment par excellence among children, young people and adults to enjoy the musical language.

«This generational coexistence is very beautiful, we love the combination between the seniority of the elderly and the energy of the young because at the end of the day we are people who do not want to stop playing music. If we get poetic, the BUMT is a house of musicians,” illustrated Vendrell. At his side, the director and the president of the group nodded and were already looking to the future, once the anniversary was closed, to “continue offering music of all kinds, which in the Band we have already shown that we know how to reinvent ourselves.”
