Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Consumer products maker Unilever on Tuesday (25/1/2022) announced plans to cut 1,500 managerial employees.
This comes after the company failed to acquire consumer health care company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
In a report Reuters, The Anglo-Dutch company said it would also organize its business into five new divisions: beauty and well-being, personal care, home care, nutrition and ice cream.
“Our new organizational model has been developed over the past year … Moving to five category-focused Business Groups will allow us to be more responsive to consumer and channel trends, with very clear delivery accountability,” said CEO Alan Jope.
In addition, Unilever also revealed that this month they will announce a major initiative to improve the performance of their remaining employees.
“After a comprehensive review of our organizational structure, we intend to move from our existing matrix to an operating model that will drive greater agility, increase category focus and strengthen accountability,” the company said in a statement.
Unilever last week scrapped plans to buy GSK for 50 billion pounds, or nearly Rp 1,000 trillion. UK fund and investment manager, Terry Smith, called the acquisition a near death experience for Unilever. The acquisition was continued by Trian Partners, a company made by the famous investor Nelson Peltz.
Unilever employs more than 150,000 people worldwide. The company itself also has branches in Indonesia. Some of its products are quite well known in Indonesia such as Dove, Sunlight, Royco, Magnum, and Rinso.
