The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said yesterday that its troops withdrew from a checkpoint in the southern town of Dhahira after Israeli forces opened fire. opened on the site.
UNIFIL, in a statement, said that peacekeepers on duty at a permanent patrol near the border town of Dhahira in southern Lebanon were exposed to gunfire from Israeli forces on the 22nd of this month.
She said, “Peacekeepers at the site were monitoring members of the Israeli army while they were doing work in nearby homes.”
She said, “When Israeli military soldiers realized they were under surveillance, they opened fire on the site, and the guards on duty went out to avoid injury.” ”
She explained that “Israeli forces repeatedly asked UNIFIL to evacuate their positions on the Blue Line before the forces deliberately destroyed cameras, lights and communication equipment in some of these locations.”
The UN force confirmed that “despite the pressure placed on the mission and the countries contributing to the peacekeeping operation, the UNIFIL forces are still in their positions and performing their tasks,” noting near that they continue to carry out the tasks assigned to them in investigation and reporting.
He called on Israeli forces and all actors to uphold their responsibilities to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel and property, stressing that “a deliberate attack on them is a serious violation on international humanitarian law and Resolution No. 1701.”
In a related context, UNIFIL reported, in a separate statement, that two medical evacuation teams had met in the town of Yarin, southern Lebanon, on the 23rd of this month to transport a patient who was exposed to gunfire from an unknown source, which caused one of the vehicles to break down and leave it at the scene.
She said, “In the afternoon of that day, a medical facility at the UNIFIL site in the town of Beit Lev was hit by a shell or missile of unknown origin, damaging the buildings. ”
She said two shells or rockets of unknown origin later fell near the UNIFIL site in Kafr Shuba, causing damage to accommodation and shelters, noting that the peacekeepers were not be injured in any of these incidents.
UNIFIL confirmed that the peacekeepers would continue to monitor the situation in the south of Lebanon and report to the UN Security Council, despite the large increase and violence on the ground in recent weeks.
