(CNN) – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Saturday that a vehicle belonging to it was damaged, after its patrol came under fire from Israeli forces.
The UNIFIL force previously wrote in a post on Twitter: “The patrol was hit at around 12 noon, local time (5 a.m. Eastern time in the United States), in the Aitaroun area in southern Lebanon.”
UNIFIL added, “This incident occurred during a period of relative calm along the Blue Line,” explaining that no peacekeepers were injured.
UNIFIL said that the head of the mission and force commander, Major General Aruludo Lazaro Saenz, on Friday urged those exchanging fire along the Blue Line to stop “this spiral of violence, strongly reminding everyone that any further escalation could have devastating consequences.”
UNIFIL added on Saturday that “the attack on peacekeeping forces, charged with reducing tensions and restoring stability in southern Lebanon, is extremely disturbing.”
UNIFIL went on to say that it condemns “this action,” reminding the parties to the conflict “of their obligations to protect peacekeepers and to avoid endangering the men and women working to restore stability.”
For its part, the Israeli army told CNN on Saturday that it was aware of the incident and was verifying the report.
