Unief taps the fingers of a professor because students had to… (Ghent)

Ghent University has reprimanded one of its professors. The professor had asked his students to show proof of vaccination if they wanted to physically come to his class. But that can’t be the case, says the university.

‘Only vaccinated students should be physically in class. So be sure to have your CST ready when you enter the room.’ A group of master’s students of economics received this message from their professor this week.

The message was clear: anyone who wanted to come to class on Wednesday had to have a Covid Safe Ticket. The rest could follow the lesson via streaming. The professor even made it clear that he would scan and check the CSTs.

Not possible, the board of Ghent University responded on Thursday. Requiring students to present a CST to physically attend classes is not in accordance with Ghent University’s corona policy, nor, for that matter, with the government’s corona policy.

The class went ‘hybrid’ on Wednesday and not a single student was turned away. Those who did not show up could also follow the lesson via a live stream that the professor had set up. But the university wants to make it clear that a corona pass cannot be requested.

‘But let it be very clear that submitting a CST with a view to taking classes at Ghent University cannot be required’, it sounds. ‘In the meantime we have let the pro know and asked him to rectify this.’
