The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday that there have been reports of 940 children missing in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas, which controls the Strip, on October 7.
In a press conference, a UNICEF spokesperson warned of “the risk of infant mortality due to drought rising, with only 5 percent of the safe water supply available.”
At the same press conference, a World Health Organization official said on Tuesday that a “public health catastrophe” was imminent in Gaza, amid overcrowding, mass displacement and damage to water and sanitation infrastructure.
This comes in conjunction with the announcement by the health authorities in Gaza that the death toll in the Strip has risen to 8,525 people, most of them civilians, including 3,542 children, as a result of the ongoing Israeli strikes since October 7.
The war broke out after Hamas militants, which are listed on the terrorist list, launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, which led to the killing of more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, including women and children.
