UNICEF Report: 230 Million Women have Experienced Female Genital Mutilation, Urgent Action Needed to End Practice

Jakarta

More than 230 million women, including girls alive today, have experienced female genital mutilation (FGM).

FGM is a traditional practice that removes part or all of the external female genitalia, which is usually called circumcision or female circumcision, in medical terms it is called circumcision.

A report released by UNICEF on Friday, which coincided with International Women’s Day, revealed that this figure had increased by 30 million or 15 percent compared to data released about eight years ago.

From the data collected, UNICEF found that progress to address FGM is still slow and not in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5, target 5.3) which focus on ending the practice by 2030.

UNICEF Executive Director, Catherine Russell, said that female circumcision without medical reasons is very detrimental and endangers the women themselves.

“Female genital cutting harms girls’ bodies, dims their future and endangers their lives,” said Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director, quoted in UNICEF’s official press release, Sunday (10/3).

He discovered an alarming trend, the majority of those targeted by this practice were children under five, aged five years and under.

In this report, UNICEF noted an increase in the number of cases in countries that still do this. Among them, Africa is still the region with the most cases of FGM, namely 144 million cases, followed by Asia with 80 million cases, and the Middle East with six million cases.

For this reason, to coincide with International Women’s Day, UNICEF urges society and global leaders to increase efforts to end discrimination and gender inequality, prioritize girls’ rights, better track the prevalence of FGM, and open services for girls.

“We need to amplify these efforts 27 times faster to end this dangerous practice,” the agency said.
