Unicaja Foundation Inaugurates ‘Great Names of 20th Century Art in Private Collections’ Exhibition in Cádiz

Unicaja Foundation has inaugurated in Cádiz today, Thursday, April 11, its exhibition ‘Great names of 20th century art in private collections’, which proposes a journey through the evolution of the revolutionary art of the avant-garde through almost fifty works by artists such as Calder, Miró, Tàpies, Canogar or Genovés coming from some of the most important private collections in the country.

The presentation event was attended by Rafael Valentin Lopezhead of Plastic Arts at the Unicaja Foundation; Rosario Lopez, president of the Association of Private Collectors of Contemporary Art 9915, an entity that collaborates in the exhibition with the transfer of the works; Jaime Sordoone of the private providers, and the curator of the exhibition, Alicia Ventura.

The sample is composed of 45 works of different formats and styles by national and international authors of the stature of Alexander Calder, Joan Miró, Robert Mapplethorpe, Julio González, Georg Baselitz, Jaume Plensa, Vik Muniz, José Guerrero, Anselm Kiefer and Antoni Tàpies, among others. In many cases these are pieces that are exhibited for the first time in Andalusia.

He contemporary art represents a revolutionary period in the history of art, characterized by a series of artistic movements that emerged after the Second World War, in Europe and the United States. This phenomenon, which spans from the end of the Second World War to the present day, has developed in a context of profound social, political and technological changes that challenged existing perceptions and structures.

Thus, during the tour, the visitor will review the history of art of this period, visiting notable milestones such as the painting of the Paris Schoolthe Spanish informalism of El Paso Group and the Spanish painters of the 70s, the new trends of the 80s and 90s and the latest creative manifestations close to our days. Furthermore, through the selection of pieces the viewer will be able to explore Spanish pictorial history from the post-war period to the present day through artists such as Saura, Feito, Yturralde, Juan Uslé, Equipo Crónica, Tàpies, Genovés, Rafael Canogar or Campano, among others.

With this initiative, Fundación Unicaja continues to bring art closer together through the organization of exhibitions that highlight the work of relevant artists. This sample allows us to assess the magnitude and importance of private art collections, which constitute a fundamental piece in the creation and formation of important museums and institutions. These private cabinets have formed the treasures of our cultural heritage, often reflecting unique and personal perspectives on contemporary art, offering alternative visions to the dominant narratives.

The exhibition ‘Great names of 20th century art in private collections’ can be visited until next August 30 at the Fundación Unicaja Cultural Center in Cádiz (Calle San Francisco, 26) from Monday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with free admission. After passing through Cádiz, the exhibition will stop at the Unicaja Foundation Cultural Center in Seville in the fall of this year.
