Uni Baskets Take New Approach with Two-Year Contracts and German Staff Prioritization

The point guard, who had 455 points in 952 minutes, a free throw rate of more than 92 percent (88/95) and 232 assists, has other plans and would like to start a family. In order to counter this trend, which has been well known for years, the Uni Baskets will be taking a different approach to putting together the squad. All players will be provided with two-year contracts. “This gives us consistency and planning security. Our coach also has a two-year contract. It was one of his wishes to put together a team that would last longer,” explains Managing Director Dominik Meyer.

The Uni Baskets would also have liked to have extended the contract with Marten Linssen. Like Lars Lagerpusch, he was seen as a “priority”. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep up financially,” regrets Dominik Meyer, who emphasizes that otherwise everything is “going according to plan”. “So far we’ve gotten all the players we wanted to get. It was always the first, not the second, third or fourth choice.”

The qualitative filling of the positions with German staff is still the top priority. “Our abdominal pain commercials are then occupied by Americans,” says Dominik Meyer. Whether the job under the board will be a purely German task, as it was recently, depends not least on how Aaron Kayser decides. “We haven’t tried to get in touch with Imports yet,” says Meyer, who can’t hide a certain anticipation at who Steven Esterkamp will pull out of a hat as point guard this time. Whether Kendale McCullum, Drew Cushingberry, Jordan Barnes or Buzz Anthony – the coach had always shown a good hand for this important part in his four years so far.

In order to flank such transfer activities, Dominik Meyer is trying to further increase the budget from currently around 850,000 euros – lower midfield in the ProA. “That’s our goal and it’s looking good. The turnover million would be a dream.” As a “cautious businessman”, Meyer keeps his tones quiet. Nevertheless, it can be heard that the Uni Baskets will possibly start the coming season under a different name. Bochum (Sparkassen-Stars), Trier (Römerstrom), Jena (Medipolis) or Gießen (Job-stairs) say hello. Dominik Meyer comments on the stalemate with the construction of the new hall and the renovation of the Maspernhalle with a telling sentence: “We don’t know anything. What is clear is that nothing is clear.”

Meanwhile, Danny Jansson (Tigers Tübingen) has been named coach of the season. In the ProB this honor went to master maker Pat Elzie (EPG Baskets Koblenz). The players of the season are Zachary Seljaas (Tigers Tübingen) in ProA and Donte Nicholas (BSW Sixers) in ProB.
