The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) praised, Thursday evening, Egypt’s efforts to rescue the victims of the earthquake in Syria.

The UNHCR said through its official account on Twitter: “Despite the difficult economic conditions, Egypt is the first international team to arrive in Syria to provide support and relief to those affected by the earthquake. Thank you to the people and government of Egypt for the constant support.”

Egypt had sent 5 military planes loaded with urgent medical aid to Syria and Turkey, under the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Earlier, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Sameh Shoukry, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, had contacted Dr. “Faisal Al-Miqdad,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria, in order to offer condolences for the victims of the terrible earthquake that Syria was exposed to today.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that the Foreign Minister conveyed to his Syrian counterpart the Egyptian government’s decision to send urgent relief aid in solidarity with the Syrian Arab Republic in facing the repercussions of that disaster. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also expressed his sincere wishes for the success of the ongoing rescue efforts, and a speedy recovery for the injured.

The Syrian Foreign Minister expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation for the Egyptian support for Syria in facing that disaster, and for Sameh Shoukry’s initiative to communicate.
