It would take 110 races before the first victory in F1. In this weekend’s Formula 1 race in Miami, the McLaren driver took his first victory after a well-balanced strategy and luck with the safety car.
To take his first victory after 100 races puts him in an exclusive group we could call “late bloomers”. But considering that most people who compete in Formula 1 never win, this is a great achievement. Compared to the “giants” of the sport, however, a victory after 100 races is considered late.
For Max Verstappen it would take 24 races, for Michael Schumacher no more than 18, a humble 30 for Fernando Alonso and no more than six for Lewis Hamilton.
In the list of drivers to take his first victory after 100 Grand Prix we find drivers like Nico Rosberg (111), Jenson Button (113), Carlos Sainz (150) and Sergio Pérez (190). Undeniably better late than never as two of these became world champions.
Lando Norris’ victory in Miami makes him the 21st British driver to win in Formula 1.
– It was about time! What a competition. It took a while, but I finally got it, says Lando Norris, according to F1.com.
– I am overjoyed for the whole team, I have finally delivered for them. A long day, a tough race, but finally at the top of the podium so I’m walking on clouds.
Championship leader Max Verstappen finished second with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc third. The next race takes place on the classic Imola circuit, on May 19.
