Unfair discounts: Helsana has to repay up to CHF 2,000 per insured person | Switzerland

SWITZERLAND [NEWS SERVICE] ⋅ Blessing of money for those insured at Helsana: According to a ruling by the Federal Supreme Court, the health insurance company must reimburse millions. The trigger is excessive discounts for those with collective insurance.

(of) With certain health insurances, up to half of all those with additional insurance benefit from discounts thanks to collective agreements. In 2016 the Financial Market Authority (Finma) intervened. Their finding: “An unjustified handling of discounts” is widespread in the market. In certain cases the discounts were so high that individual insured persons were disadvantaged. Anyone who takes out supplementary insurance through their employer, for example, is insured collectively.

Helsana did not want to accept that and defended itself against it up to the federal court. After the health insurance company was defeated by the highest judges, it now complies. “In the light of a federal court ruling from the end of 2019, some of the discounts in relation to others have proven to be too generous. These disadvantages must therefore be compensated, ”said media spokesman Can Arikan on Thursday in the program“ HeuteMorgen ”on Radio SRF.

It is planned that the process will be completed by mid-2021 and the amounts will be paid out. According to Helsana, the insured will receive a double-digit amount back for the years 2010 to 2017. For each insured person, amounts of up to CHF 2,000 should be involved.
