Unexplained Spike in Child Pneumonia Cases – Health Update November 2023

Nov 15, 2023 at 6:20 PM Update: 13 hours ago

Never before in the past three years have so many children between the ages of five and fourteen visited their GP with pneumonia in one week as last week. There is currently no explanation for this large number.

Last week, approximately eighty children between the ages of five and fourteen had pneumonia per 100,000 inhabitants. An increase was also visible in the winter of 2022, but the peak remained at sixty children per 100,000 inhabitants.

Nivel has noticed that GPs have been receiving more visits from children with pneumonia since July 31 this year compared to previous years. There has been an upward trend since August 14.

Nevertheless, it is unclear why so many young children suffer from pneumonia. Nivel informs NU.nl that they only keep track of the figures, but do not conduct any further research. The RIVM cannot explain the increase either.

Also increasing in other age groups

Nivel also saw an increase in the number of pneumonias in children aged zero to four years old in recent weeks. An increase can also be seen among young people between 15 and 24 years old. These figures have stagnated last week compared to earlier.

The number of pneumonias also increased in people aged 65 and older. Relatively speaking, more elderly people still get pneumonia than young people or children.
