In 2019, Elon Musk stated that replacing a Tesla battery would cost between $5,000 and $10,000, but prices would change within 4 years.
Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey say they received a bill of £17,374, or $20,698, to repair the battery from their Tesla electric car, which was damaged in last week’s rainstorm.
The amount is only three times less than the cost of the car itself.
“Honestly, I can’t believe this happened. Thought we would receive a bill for £500 or £1000. But 17,000 is a completely indecent amount. My heart sank,” says Bacigalupo.
When Bacigalupo and his partner were unable to start the car after heavy rain, they arranged for it to be delivered to Tesla Edinburgh by a car collection company. The man subsequently received a call saying the battery was “damaged due to water damage.” The 8-year warranty did not cover damage, so the car owner was asked if he would be willing to pay $20,698 for repairs.
“Did I want to? I was stunned and at a loss for words,” said Bacigalupo, who said in a statement to Tesla that he was not to blame for the breakdown.
The couple filed a complaint with Tesla, to which they received an email promising to investigate and provide a response.

A similar incident occurred last year when Canadian Tesla owner Mario Zelaya was told that replacing his car’s battery would cost $26,000. The man was locked out of his Model S and Zelaya eventually sold the car after spending $30 on a replacement. ownership documents that were locked in the cabin.
In 2019, Elon Musk said that replacing a Tesla battery could cost between $5,000 and $10,000, but announced different prices in 2023. According to Recurrent, a battery replacement can now actually cost as much as $20,000.
