A surprising and unexpected result of Alfa Romeo in Hungary. Recently, this team has had trouble making it to at least Q2, but in Budapest they conjured Kuan-yu Chou and Valtteri Bottas with their single-seaters, fifth and second respectively. seventh place. What happened to this team that they are in such form all of a sudden?
Saturday full of superlatives. Chou dominated Q1 and was fastest outright, making it to Q3 for the first time in the season and leaving behind both Ferraris, both Aston Martins and even Sergio Pérez at Red Bull. Fifth place and starting from the third row is a huge success for the Chinese racer, which no one expected before the start of the weekend.
“The team gave us a very competitive car this weekend. I was able to get the most out of it when it mattered most, on all tires from Q1 to Q3. In the last attempt, I was under a lot of pressure, as in the first one I lost my time due to exceeding the track limits. I gave it my all and I’m satisfied because it couldn’t have been much more.” he said after qualifying Chow for Sky Television.
“I would say that the speed circuits don’t suit us, but Hungary is much more technical and everyone drives with maximum downforce here. It seems to work for us. The most important thing is that all three tire compounds are working very well for us, so I’m looking forward to the race.” he added Chow.
He will start in front of Charles Leclerc, who himself said that he wants to get through the Alfa Romeo pilot as quickly as possible and focus on the best. “I will try to gain some positions at the start and overtake McLaren. But we have to make sure we focus on our own race. I’m sure they have a stronger pack than us, but I think we can fight in the top six or eight,” said the Chinese racer.
Alfa Romeo has one of the most balanced driving pairs. It’s 5:4 for Valtteri Bottas on points, 6:4 for Bottas in the race comparison and 6:4 for Bottas in the qualifying comparison (6:5 if we add Valtteri’s disqualification in Silverstone to Chou’s favor), so the Finnish competitor has a slight advantage, but in Hungary he had to bow down to the performance of his teammate. However, the final seventh place is not a cause for sadness.
“I’m a little surprised, but pleasantly so! We certainly take this result and our performance was good throughout qualifying and on all tire compounds. I think the layout of this track suits our car and highlights its strengths. I am very proud of the whole team today,” he said after qualifying Valtteri Bottas.
“The race pace doesn’t look bad either, but it should be much warmer tomorrow. It’s not easy to overtake in Hungary, so hopefully we got a good position at the start and it will help us get good points in the race.” he added Bottas.
