Unexpected Quay Construction Forces Catering Entrepreneur to Sell Business at a Loss

Catering entrepreneur Remco Boas has been running his business on the Tweede Kostverlorenkade in West for just over six months. But when he found out that major work would be taking place on the quay over the next three years, he immediately sold his business at a significant loss. “I can’t run a business in this chaos.”

When Remco Boas bought his business on the Tweede Kostverlorenkade, he said he did not know that work would take place on the quay. “It was a surprise to us that we would be in the construction fence for three years and that the street and quay were opened. It just becomes a sandbox and chaos here. It makes it so unworkable that we have now chosen to get out. to leave with a ridiculously large loss of half a million. All my savings and my entire old age are in it.”

Known in advance

Boas says he had contact in advance with the district, the district manager, the neighborhood director and the previous owner about whether there were any special developments in the area. Boas: “Everyone said no,” he says. “A contractor eventually had to tell me what would happen here.”

The municipality states that at the time of the takeover it was already known that the quay work would take place. “So it is strange that the entrepreneur was not informed about this by the previous owner or the real estate agent. The catering business is accessible during the work,” said a spokesperson.
