Jeffrey Brodsky, a journalist from the US media website “The Grayzone”, who took part in the expedition, claims that the researchers had missed this find until now.
“It is not known how long the boot had been on the seabed. Expedition organizer Anderson believes that the boot may have been previously covered by sediment or mud that was moved by underwater currents or the shock wave of the explosion. Otherwise, it is not clear how investigators could have missed it,” Brodsky writes. .
The journalist assumes that the owner of the boot could be a diver who lost it while setting up the bombs. Another version of it – the owner could be a person who returns to the scene after the explosion.
“Alternatively, the boot may belong to a diver who was ordered to return to the crime scene to retrieve an unexploded ordnance intended for an intact Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The boot may have belonged to a commercial diver,” Brodsky writes.
The Grayzone has identified the boot model as the Northern Diver’s Thor. However, the company does not claim that this boot is their product.
“It looks like a ‘Thor’ but I can’t be 100% sure. If it’s a ‘Thor’ they’ve been used by divers in the oil and gas industry before. It’s part of a dry suit normally used in contaminated water to keep safety of the diver,” revealed Neil Tordoff, director of military and commercial sales for Northern Diver.
A company spokesperson also revealed that Northern Diver is no longer making these boots due to production disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar boots are used by commercial divers around the world.
However, Grayzone emphasizes that this model is similar to the one used by the US Navy. “Ukrainian navy divers have also been seen wearing similar boots,” Brodsky adds.
