UNESCO to present policy guidelines on use of generative AI in education sector

  • A survey carried out by the organization in university centers determined that less than 10% have developed institutional policies on the use of generative artificial intelligence applications.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) will present in September 2023 a series of policy guidelines on the use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as areas of skills in this technology for students and teachers in the education sector.

In a statement published on Friday, May 26, the organization detailed that the proposals will be presented during the Digital Learning Week, which will take place at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (France) from September 4 to 7.

To start a first debate, UNESCO organized an online conference of education ministers on May 25, in which at least 40 officials participated.

Concerns in the academic field

The discussion carried out by the organization showed a series of common concerns, such as the adaptation of educational systems to the changes that AI is generating, as well as the integration of technology in methods and study plans or exams.

In addition, the representatives expressed concern about how to mitigate the problems that it implies, such as the realization of errors and biased information.

The ministerial debate also determined that governments around the world are formulating responses to the rapidly changing situation, with the development or adaptation of national strategies on AI or data protection.

Generative AI opens up new horizons and challenges for education. But we must take urgent steps to ensure that new AI technologies are integrated into education on our terms,” Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, said in the letter.

Few institutions have developed guidance on the use of AI

Stefania Giannini asserted that her duty is to “prioritize safety, inclusion, diversity, transparency and quality”, as established in the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, a regulation unanimously approved by its 193 States. members in November 2021.

A UNESCO survey of more than 450 university centers found that less than 10% of them have developed institutional policies or formal guidance on the use of generative AI applications.

According to the organization, this shows that institutions face a “challenge” when it comes to responding to the emergence of these tools, which can quickly create written and visual content.
