The UNESCO Committee responsible took this decision at its 44th session in Fuzhou, China.
The decision committee argued on the basis of the recent ban on cruise ships, as well as the measures planned to find a long-term solution for shipping.
UNESCO is concerned about the impact of the tourism and cruise industry, as well as the potential damage to buildings and infrastructure and construction projects planned in Venice.
The Italian authorities must report by December on the measures taken to protect the city’s ecosystem and its inhabitants.
Commenting on the UNESCO decision, Italian Culture Minister Dario Francescini said it had “achieved the first important result”.
“The world’s attention to Venice must remain high, and it is everyone’s responsibility to work to protect the lagoon,” he said.
