UNESCO Declares Hanseatic League Documents as World Document Heritage

17 documents on the history of the Hanseatic League from six countries have been included in the international register of UNESCO’s Memory of the World (MOW) program.

Among them are two pieces from the Bremen State Archives. The unique records and documents were declared a UNESCO World Document Heritage.

Included are three folios with Hanseatic League resolutions, including the oldest manuscript of the Bremen Council (1389 to 1517). There are also commercial treaties such as that between Bremen, the Hanseatic cities and the Kingdom of Norway from 1294, the original of which is kept in the Bremen State Archives.

The World Heritage Days will take place from 2nd to 4th June. Because the town hall with the Roland is also one of them. It starts on June 2nd at 11 a.m. on the market square. In addition, the exhibition “Bremen – History – World Heritage” starts in the town hall. There you will also find information on the World Document Heritage MOW and the Hanseatic Documents. On June 4th there are free guided tours from 11 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. through the town hall.
