Darmstadt’s Mathildenhöhe, Schum sites on the Rhine and other proposals for the World Heritage title are currently the subject of Unsecos. The decision is expected in July.
From today until July 31, the Unesco World Heritage Committee will meet in Fuzhou, China. The meeting was postponed last year due to the corona pandemic. Now it is to take place as a hybrid event, which means that some committee members will be connected online, as the deputy spokesman for the German Unesco Commission, Peter Martin, explains when asked by FR.
In addition to the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, the Schum sites Speyer, Worms and Mainz have been proposed for the World Heritage List. A total of five applications in which Germany is involved should be decided. Together with Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic, Germany is a partner in the nomination of important European baths of the 19th century, including Bad Ems, Bad Kissingen and Baden-Baden. Applications with German participation have also been submitted for the Danube Limes and the Lower Germanic Limes.
World heritage sites
Whether monuments, city ensembles , Industrial plants or natural landscapes: there are currently 1,121 sites in 167 countries on the Unesco world heritage list, 46 of them in Germany and six in Hesse.
In Hesse this is one of them Lorsch Abbey (1991), the Messel fossil site (1995), sections of the Upper Rhine Valley (2002) and the primeval beech forests of the Carpathian Mountains and Old Beech Forests of Germany (2011), which include parts of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, and the Wilhelmshöhe Mountain Park in Kassel (2013).
The idea of the world heritage list is to preserve natural and cultural heritage sites of exceptional universal value for all of humanity. To this end, the contracting states are called upon to name significant sites on their territory and present them in a nomination process. The title obliges to preserve the sites. cka / epd

The individual applications are not in competition with one another, says Martin. The Mathildenhöhe as well as the Schum sites could be added to the list of world heritage sites. If an application does not lead to appointment this year, it does not automatically fall through, but is referred back for revision. This could be the case if, for example, construction projects were viewed critically. The applications would be assessed in advance.
When examining the application for the Mathildenhöhe, there were objections to the planned visitor center on the eastern slope. According to the Unesco assessment, this should be relocated from the nominated area. Darmstadt’s Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) said on request from FR that the plans had already been made more precise and that the visitor center had been reduced in size and moved out of the core area.
Apparently a decision is expected on July 24th. Because for this day the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art has already invited to a press conference at which Science Minister Angela Dorn (Greens) and Mayor Partsch want to comment on the result. cka
