The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) expressed concern on Monday about the increase in attacks on schools, students and professionals in the sector, a scenario it considered unacceptable.
In a statement, the multilateral body addressed in particular the growing impact of armed conflicts on education, citing countries such as Myanmar, Palestine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Ukraine and Yemen.
A study reviewed by the organization revealed that in 2022-2023, six thousand attacks against students, teachers and educational centers were recorded, with one thousand cases of military use of these facilities.
Regarding the victims, he regretted that more than 10 thousand students were added to the list.
According to UNESCO, there is an urgent need to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2601 of 2021, an initiative that calls on all parties to safeguard, protect, respect and promote the right to education, including during armed conflicts.
She also urged all States to implement the recommendations of the Declaration on Safety in Schools, which aims to prevent such attacks.
