UNESCO backs Russian plan to save Palmyra – 2024-02-27 06:53:19

/ world today news/ UNESCO’s Executive Board unanimously approved the Russian plan to save Palmyra, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday (April 13).

The project entitled “The Role of UNESCO in the Restoration and Conservation of Palmyra and Other Sites of Syrian Cultural Heritage” was presented by the Russian delegation during the 199th session of the Council. Co-authors of the document are about 40 member countries of the organization.

“The consensus draft decision under consideration has both symbolic and practical significance. The symbolism is that by voting unanimously, we express our unanimous solidarity with the war-torn people of the Syrian Arab Republic. From a practical point of view, strongly condemning the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage, we express our readiness with joint efforts and means to assist in the restoration and preservation of Palmyra and other World Cultural Heritage sites,” said the Permanent Representative of Russia to UNESCO Eleonora Mitrofanova at the presentation of the document.

Mitrofanova called the results of the vote a “big victory”. And he noted with joy that even countries “that have a different view of the Syrian conflict” have joined the document.

In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the issue of saving Palmyra with Syrian leader Bashar Assad and UNESCO Secretary General Irina Bokova, Polit.ru recalls. The participants in the conversation agreed to assess the damage caused to Palmyra in the near future and to prepare a plan for the restoration of the destroyed monuments.
