UNESCO and France have established a partnership “to prevent and combat the increase in anti-Semitic acts in schools and universities”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday, noting the increase in reports “in recent weeks”.
“Facing anti-Semitism and other forms of hatred in schools”
“With the resumption of hostilities in the Middle East in recent weeks, Jewish communities around the world have been targeted and threatened by levels of anti-Semitic hatred unprecedented in recent decades,” underlines the Quai d’Orsay as Paris welcomes Sunday a big march against anti-Semitism. The march is intended to be a response to the explosion in the number of hostile acts against Jews in France since the Hamas massacres in Israel on October 7 and the military response that followed.
“This increase also has serious consequences in schools and universities,” underlines the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Educators face an urgent need for effective guidance on how to respond to prevent and confront anti-Semitism and other forms of hatred in schools.”
Formation
“Faced with the awakening of the ‘filthy beast’ of anti-Semitism, a collective start is urgent and necessary,” declared the Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, quoted in the press release. “Education is a powerful response to this scourge,” she added, highlighting UNESCO’s “long experience” and “solid skills” in training and supporting teachers in this area.
The partnership between UNESCO and France should make it possible to train not only teachers but also all education professionals, “at all levels of education, to deconstruct stereotypes and prejudices, to raise awareness of the forms contemporary anti-Semitism and help them protect victims, whether in class or as part of extracurricular and sporting activities”, also specified the Quai d’Orsay.
France will mobilize initial funding of 600,000 euros to implement these actions, the Quai d’Orsay also indicated.
