Paris. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today warned about the increasingly frequent attacks suffered by journalists who cover environmental issues.
In a statement, the multilateral entity drew attention to the prevailing threats against these specialized reporters and announced the holding of a high-level conference in Chile to address the challenge, in the context of World Press Freedom Day, which It is celebrated on May 3.
“Objective and truthful journalistic investigation into environmental issues is more important than ever. Without it, it is impossible to reduce and mitigate the effects of the climate crisis, but journalists who are dedicated to these issues face serious and increasingly frequent threats,” he warned.
According to UNESCO, the conference scheduled in the Chilean capital from May 2 to 4 will be the first dedicated within the UN framework to climate disorders and freedom of the press.
The expectations for the forum are to analyze threats and study actions to better support and protect reporters who work on environmental issues.
Participants will also discuss how to address misinformation, denialism and distortion of scientific facts, and consider building coalitions to investigate the powerful transnational interests behind disinformation campaigns against climate action, he added.
According to the preview circulated here, UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay and Chilean President Gabriel Boric will open the event, which will bring together experts, environmental advocates and stakeholders from all regions of the world, including journalists, activists, lawyers and scientists.
