Unemployment Remains Stable in Pays de la Loire, Job Creation Slows in Commercial Sector

According to figures published by INSEE, the unemployment rate remained stable in the second quarter in Pays de la Loire. Even if job creation slows down. Particularly in the commercial sector.

The Pays de la Loire region confirms its good results in terms of employment. According to figures communicated by INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies), the unemployment rate is, at the end of the second quarter, the lowest in France with 5.6%, a stable figure compared to in the first trimester.

In three years, this unemployment rate has fallen by more than three points.

“The unemployment rate is stable in Loire-Atlantique, Mayenne and Vendée, details INSEE. It is almost stable in Maine-et-Loire (+0.1%) and slightly increasing in Sarthe (+0.2%). Mayenne (4.7%) and Vendée (5.0%) are respectively 3rd and 5th among the French departments with the lowest unemployment rates.”

Although employment continues to grow, this progression slowed down in the second quarter. At the start of the year, it showed an increase of +0.5%. This summer, the positive balance was only 0.2%. It is in Maine-et-Loire and Mayenne that it is progressing the most.

If, in the commercial tertiary sector (excluding the public sector), employment is stagnating, it is in the industrial sector that it is most dynamic. The construction sector, on the other hand, shows a drop in employment which was already visible in the first quarter. This should continue in the coming months.

“In the region, INSEE tells us, the number of building permits fell for the fifth consecutive quarter, but less sharply than in the previous quarter. This continued decline can be explained in particular by the increase in construction costs in the wake of the war in Ukraine and by the rise in interest rates, combined with financial regulations, which have made access to credit more difficult for businesses. individuals.”

Finally, when it comes to business creations or failures, the figures are not good. While in France, the number of business creations increased slightly (+0.8%) in the second quarter, in Pays de la Loire, there was a decrease (-1.6%) compared to the first quarter. 2021.

The number of business failures continues to grow (+8.4% in the 2nd quarter, after + 12.0% in the previous quarter).
