Is France living beyond its means?
The turn of the screw was feared by job seekers. First measure to come in terms of unemployment insurance from January 1, 2025: compensation will no longer be calculated over 365 days, but over 360 days, i.e. 5 days less. On an allowance of 1300 euros per month, this represents 20 euros less.
Cross-border job seekers put to work
Seniors are particularly targeted by the agreement signed by employers and unions (new window). Since returning to work is more complicated for them, their compensation period is usually longer. But from now on, to be eligible, you will have to be 55 years old and no longer 53. In this scenario, Isabelle, looking for a job as an accountant, would become too young and would lose four and a half months of unemployment. “Already, this is the age category that is very difficult to find a position. And perhaps not at the same salary”she laments.
With this measure in particular, the social partners will achieve 500 million euros in savings per year. This is even 100 million more than the government’s request. “As we have, in terms of volume, a greater number of unemployed or unemployed seniors, the idea in taking this measure is to make more savings”analyzes Anne-Sophie Alsif, chief economist at BDO France.

And the brunt of the economy will weigh on cross-border job seekers. Those who worked in Switzerland, for example, but receive unemployment in France. This is very expensive for Unédic: 800 million euros per year currently for 77,000 people. This is the case of a former salesman met by our journalists. “The positions I was looking for were assistant store manager positions. And in terms of salary, it was between 1700 and 1800 euros net per month. That is to say what I currently receive as unemployed”he specifies.
With the new rules, it will be more difficult for him to refuse offers in France.
