When a worker is made redundant, one of the immediate benefits they can access is unemployment insurance, which is the savings they have built up in their AFC Individual Unemployment Account (CIC) while working.
These savings are achieved through contributions that are deducted from the gross earnings of the employee enrolled in the AFC, as is the case with the AFP pension discounts.

Can I collect unemployment insurance without settlement?
At the end of an employment relationship, it is common practice for the employee and his employer to sign the settlement. In this document, both parties establish commitments regarding any payments or other matters. However, there are times when the role signing instance does not exist.
As explained by the AFC, the unemployed can claim this benefit without having the liquidation. Naturally, in its place, other documentation must be presented that supports the termination of the employment relationship between the former worker and his former company.
The cards accepted by the FTA for exercising insurance collection are the following:
- Termination Letter: Issued and signed by the employer.
- Proof of Dismissal Letter: Issued by the Department of Labor.
- Letter of resignation: signed by the worker and ratified by a minister of faith.
- Letter of mutual agreement: signed by the employee and the employer, ratified before a minister of faith.
- Certificate of termination of the employment relationship issued by the Labor Inspectorate.
- Electronic affidavit, issued by the Department of Labor.
- Letter of self-dismissal or indirect dismissal: signed by the worker.
- Notice of termination of employment due to bankruptcy of the employer.
- Conciliation before the Labor Directorate.
- Employment contract of less than 30 days.
- Deed of liquidation.
- Minutes of attendance or judicial conciliation.
- Judicial ruling.
- Job application.
- Employment contract and wage settlement of port workers.
How is unemployment insurance charged?
The collection process can be done at the AFC offices, but the recommendation is to do it on the Internet, by visiting the Virtual branch of the administrator
On this platform, the user can log in with their unique password or their AFC password, then click on the option “insurance billing” and then on “Start collection request”.
During this process, the person will need to attach the transaction or any of the other documents above, as applicable, with all of its pages on both sides.
Once the documents have been attached, the applicant will be able to view the payment simulation, as well as the amounts and dates on which they will be received. The last step is to confirm the transfer details, i.e. enter the details of the bank account where the insurance will be deposited.
