Unemployment in the Czech Republic is rising slightly. Four percent of people are unemployed. The bad winter season, which mountain resort operators consider to be the worst in the last 10 years, also has its share in this. And unemployment there is currently a percentage point above the national average.
February’s view of Bedřichov is rather depressing. The snow melted, leaving mud, empty parking lots and canceled races. Around 60 pairs of skis are normally rented out at the local ski rental every day. Now he is the only one of the four employees there. They will even be closed on Monday.
“Eight people will stay at home. There was one customer on Wednesday, nobody yesterday and one customer today. It’s terrible,” complained Marek Pazderský, the operator of a shop and ski rental in Bedřichov, on Friday.
Hoteliers, who only a week ago had all their capacities booked, now prefer to go elsewhere so they don’t have to look at empty rooms.
“The current occupancy rate as of today is three percent, negligible. Even so, the disappointment that I clearly have this year is that no one called or even said: Franto, I’m sorry, am I sorry, or am I not owed something?” said hotelier František Jelínek disappointedly.
In Bedřichov, only one of the slopes is working, and that is the two-hundred-meter children’s lift. “Sometimes it’s water, sometimes it’s raining, but the children are brave, so it’s possible,” said one of the skiers. “I had two instructors, but we sent one home,” said the children’s ski instructor.
“The effects of the mild winter are particularly evident in the mountainous areas of the Liberec region. In Semilsko, which is an important tourist location, the current highest unemployment rate is 4.7 percent. The slight increase also affected the centers of Bedřichov and Kořenov,” said Kateřina Sadílková, director of the Labor Office Liberec region.
The Labor Office adds to this that it is able to take care of and help all people who have lost their jobs.
