Unemployment in Latvia in December was higher than the EU and euro area average

In Latvia, the unemployment rate was 7.5% in December, which was higher than the average in the European Union (EU) and the eurozone, according to Eurostat data released on Tuesday.

According to these data, the highest unemployment rates among EU Member States in December were in Spain (13%), Greece (12.7%), Italy (9%) and Sweden (8.2%).

The lowest unemployment rates in December were in the Czech Republic (2.1%), Poland (2.9%), Germany (3.2%), Malta (3.4%), Hungary (3.7%) and the Netherlands (3, 8%). Unemployment was 5.2% in Estonia and 5.6% in Lithuania.

According to seasonally adjusted data, unemployment in the EU averaged 6.4% in December, compared to 7% in the euro area.

According to Eurostat, 13.612 million people were out of work in the bloc in December, of whom 11.481 million were in the eurozone.
