Unemployment and Underemployment Rates Increase in Urban and Rural Areas in Q2-2023

This rate went from 15.5% to 16.3% in urban areas (+0.8 point) and from 4.2% to 5.7% in rural areas (+1.5 point), specifies the HCP which has just published an information note relating to the market situation in Q2-2023.

According to the same source, the number of unemployed increased, between the second quarter of 2022 and that of 2023, by 156,000 people, rising from 1,387,000 to 1,543,000 unemployed, which corresponds to an increase of 11%, resulting from an increase of 92,000 unemployed in urban areas and 64,000 in rural areas.

The rise in unemployment affected all categories of the population. It increased by 1.1 points for men, from 9.9% to 11%, and by 1.9 points for women, from 15.1% to 17%. It also recorded an increase of 1.2 points among graduates, from 18% to 19.2%, and 0.9 points among non-graduates, from 3.6% to 4.5%.

The rise in the unemployment rate affected all age groups. It is more pronounced among young people aged 15 to 24 (+3.4 points), rising from 30.2% to 33.6%, and among people aged 25 to 34 (+1.1 point) , dropping from 18.7% to 19.8%.

Regarding the volume of underemployment, it increased during the same period from 939,000 to 983,000 people, from 500,000 to 549,000 in the cities and from 439,000 to 434,000 in the countryside. The underemployment rate thus fell, at the national level, from 8.5% to 9%, from 7.7% to 8.4% in urban areas and from 9.6% to 9.9% in rural areas. .

The underemployment rate for men (10.1%) is twice as high as that for women (5%). In urban areas, it is 8.7% for men against 7.2% for women and in rural areas, it is almost 6 times higher among men with 12.3% than among women (2.1 %).
