Unearthing Ancient Egypt: The Groundbreaking Nile Expedition of 1842-1845

A research trip along the Nile from 1842 to 1845 was an adventurous undertaking. Producing precise documentation of the ancient remains of the ancient cultures in the Nile Valley in scorching heat, in a sandstorm and maltreated by flies, fleas and locusts posed a great challenge. The Prussian expedition, led by the Egyptologist and linguist Richard Lepsius, succeeded in this feat. The Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection in Berlin is dedicating a special exhibition to the groundbreaking expedition. The focus is on the different objects and materials that were brought back from the trip and their influence on the development of the emerging science of Egyptology at the time. The accompanying book offers a comprehensive insight into the historical context of the research trip, portrays its protagonists and illuminates the history of its impact that continues to this day. Using numerous illustrations, it shows fascinating diaries, objects, sketches and drawings of the expedition participants, which are still integrated into current research today and help to gain insights that were unimaginable for Richard Lepsius and the other participants – the adventure continues.
