Jakarta (ANTARA) – Skin and genital specialist at RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo dr. Larisa Paramitha, Sp.KK(K), Sp.DVE., Subsp.OBK said yellowish spots around the eyes are the result of a buildup of cholesterol under the eye skin tissue, which is called xanthelasma.
“This is due to a buildup of cholesterol, not fat. It is deposited in the tissue under the skin around the eyes. “Actually, xanthelasma is not a dangerous disease, however, (people) often come to the doctor complaining of aesthetic problems,” said Larisa in an online discussion attended in Jakarta, Friday.
Xanthelasma is a specific shaped spot, which is located in the area around the eyes which is yellowish or orange in color. Usually the boundaries are firm, and can be wide, with a flat texture and not convex or protruding.
On darker skin xanthelasma sometimes appears with slightly darker patches.
Larisa also said that xanthelasma is actually not a dangerous disease and does not cause pain even if pressed. However, patients often come with spots in their eyes wanting to be treated because of aesthetic problems.
Spots in the eyes are not always xanthelasma, there are several skin problems that are similar to xanthelasma so many ordinary people find it difficult to differentiate them.
“There are a lot of smaller, horizontal shapes, but due to the addition of tissue skin cells, there are others that are small, like cystic acne, which are white in color. Ordinary people find it difficult to differentiate because, for example, their skin is darker. “So it’s best to consult a doctor,” said Larisa.
